Implementing IBM Rational ClearQuest provides a broad overview of the process, techniques, and issues involved in implementing ClearQuest for defect tracking and change management. The presentation is well organized, easy to follow and navigate, and fairly informal. The chapters are intuitively structured and supported throughout by screen shots and ample references to IBM's developerWorks Web site, tables, and diagrams.

 

The book is written for technical project managers and engineers who are implementing a defect-tracking solution. The presentation is brief enough to allow the reader rapidly to become familiar with the implementation of a defect-tracking solution. The discussion does not provide exhaustive detail on any one topic, and helpful references are provided for the reader who is interested in further information. Dozens of screen shots convey a good impression of the actual process of implementing and configuring ClearQuest but certainly do not cover as much detail as a user’s manual. Numerous tables and diagrams clearly convey a structured view of the key issues, data structures, and processes of defect tracking and implementing a defect-tracking solution.

QA professionals will find this book to be an excellent overview of the key concepts of implementing ClearQuest. It describes the benefits a defect-tracking system brings to quality assurance and communication among the people who deal with defects from the customer to the support professional, developer, and marketing professional. One strength of the book is the broad coverage of topics, which includes making a business case for implementing a defect tracking solution, analyzing the requirements for the system, and the workflow of defect resolution.
