ARTICLE: The Road to UML Is Paved with Good Intentions Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: A picture is worth a thousand words. Does that mean that a model is worth a thousand requirements?
A thousand test cases? Not exactly, but a model will tremendously aid in the development of
requirements and test cases, and help facilitate inter-team communication of requirements and test
cases; at least, that’s always the intent. One way to help ensure that these good intentions come to
fruition is to test the diagrams that the model is composed of, for 4C compliance – completeness,
correctness, consistency, and clarity. There are different languages for producing models, but this
presentation focuses on the Unified Modeling Language (UML), and methods of testing models that are
created with UML. Date Posted: Oct 11, 2002 |
ARTICLE: Designing an Automated Web Test Environment Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: This paper offers an alternative to the typical automated test scripting method of "record and playback now and enhance the automation environment later." It explores a regression automation system design for testing Internet applications through the GUI, along with scripting techniques to enhance the scalability and flexibility of an automated test suite. This paper will present a basic
structure for an automated test environment, and will expand on each of the items found in that structure. Web testing levels will be laid out, along with a basic approach to designing test scripts based on those Web-testing levels. Date Posted: Sep 7, 2001 |
COLUMN: Taekwondo-mation -- Training Your Scripts for Dynamic Combat Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: In the first three parts of this series, instructor Dion Johnson taught how to write flexible and balanced automation scripts that can defend themselves against the application under test's attacks. Now that our automated test scripts are strong, they're ready for the next and final step of training. Enter Dion's dojan once more, and prepare yourself to learn offensive strikes in regards to dynamic-path handling. Date Posted: Apr 25, 2008 |
COLUMN: Taekwondo-mation--Training Your Scripts for Dynamic Combat Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: The taekwondo-mation journey continues as instructor Dion Johnson dons his combat robes to teach a lesson in self-defense. In this week's column, Dion reveals to test automators the four common attacks on automated tests, and how they can "train" their scripts to identify, capture, and handle these threats. COLUMN: Taekwondo-mation--Training Your Scripts for Dynamic Combat Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: In his second installment of the four-part Taekwondo-mation series, Dion Johnson teaches the art of balance in three straightforward steps. Balance requires equilibrium, and in test automation that translates to increasing the coverage of a single script without increasing the amount of code in the automated test. In this week's column, Dion explains how to increase the coverage by randomizing the data being tested.
COLUMN: Taekwondo-mation--Training Your Scripts for Dynamic Combat Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: The martial arts are composed of various methods of combat that serve the purpose of defeating an opponent or defending oneself from a threat. Automated test scripts have an opponent, and that opponent is the application that the scripts are created to test. This opponent tries to prevent the automated scripts from winning the match by stopping the successful execution and detection of existing errors in the application. As test automators, it is our job to train those scripts for dynamic, hand-to-hand combat with the application. Time to let Dion Johnson teach you a new martial art in this week's column: Taekwondo-mation!
COLUMN: The Day Best Practices Died Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: This week's column starts at the sad ending of Best Practices. What at first seems like a death caused by over exhaustion turns out to be caused by foul play. Author Dion Johnson investigates Best Practices' death and tries to figure out "whodunnit" by examining accusations and exposing dark revelations.
COLUMN: Object of My Desire Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: Object orientation, the least talked about component of test automation, might be the most important factor. In this column, Dion Johnson explains how effective test automation is heavily reliant on objects.
COLUMN: Grassroots Testing: A Campaign for Improvement Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: With the votes cast, the polls closed, and the candidates elected, we say farewell to another political season that captivated everyone in a way that we thought only the Super Bowl could. Of all the soap opera-esque drama that occurred during the general election, Dion Johnson found grassroots campaigns to be the most interesting because they generated the greatest level of success from the bottom up, as opposed to from the top down. He believes the world of software testing can learn a lot from this grassroots approach. In this week's column, Dion embarks on a grassroots campaign trail that he hopes will get any process improvement initiative elected.
COLUMN: The Six Million Dollar Automator Author(s): Dion Johnson Summary: Organizations expect software test automation to make software testing more efficient. But although test automation tools are gaining in popularity, automation itself remains relatively disregarded. With the Automation Body of Knowledge (ABOK), IT organizations will be better equipped to identify qualified automation resources and to offer their resources the benefit of a real automation career development track. In this week's column, Dion Johnson explains how automators may improve their skills and better market themselves to organizations of interest, even without access to the current fad tool.
